Air Selangor, the largest water services provider in Malaysia and the third largest in the region, has set an ambitious goal to become the leading water service provider in Asia by 2030, while providing the best customer experience.
Their vision and mission are also encapsulated in the company’s brand promise, ‘Joy In Every Drop’, signifying its unwavering dedication to infuse joy into every droplet, honouring water as the planet’s most cherished and invaluable resource.
Sustainable Initiatives: Preserving Water, Protecting Future
At the forefront of this endeavour also lies Air Selangor’s steadfast commitment to sustainability, which is integral to its mission of delivering sustainable and reliable water supply to 9.1 million consumers. Aligning seamlessly with its core business strategy, Air Selangor has translated its sustainability agenda into a robust operational framework.
A standout among these initiatives is the Rasau Water Supply Scheme, designed to secure a sustainable supply of clean, treated water for future growth areas in the Greater Klang Valley, benefiting approximately four million consumers.
The scheme features the innovative repurposing of nine ponds, covering an area equivalent to 650 football fields, to serve as the nation’s first dual-function off-river storages with a storage capacity of 42 mcm (million cubic metre) and 20 mcm, acting as both a vital raw water source and a flood mitigation system respectively. Under the Net Zero Energy initiative, Air Selangor is dedicated to reducing its carbon footprint, aiming for net zero by 2040. This includes the implementation of energy-saving measures and renewable energy projects like the Renewable Energy for Water (RENEW) programme, encompassing the installation of six self-consumption solar PV systems, harnessing clean energy for generation and use. The company’s Facilities Energy Management programme has also yielded notable results, achieving a 7.04% reduction in energy costs.
In addressing climate change-induced disasters like floods and droughts, Air Selangor’s internal Climate Change Taskforce is poised to bolster resilience through necessary interventions and enhanced communication. The taskforce will also serve as a pre-emptive measure to safeguard operational assets from potential flood events, ensuring uninterrupted service delivery, particularly during Malaysia’s annual monsoon season.
Additionally, Air Selangor is actively reducing Non-Revenue Water (NRW) to guarantee a sustainable water supply for future generations. Through targeted programmes like Physical Loss Reduction and Commercial Loss Reduction initiatives, substantial progress has been made in reducing water losses, with the company recording a 27.76% NRW rate in 2022.
More Than Just Water Provision
Beyond being a water services provider, Air Selangor places a strong emphasis on community engagement and corporate social responsibility through various initiatives such as Skim Air Darul Ehsan (SADE), a reapportion programme providing 20 cubic meters of free water every month to low-income families, and Sesama Mara which means ‘Together We Move Forward’, a grassroots initiative to give back to communities, particularly the underprivileged and vulnerable.
Additionally, its Water Handbook, a collaboration between Air Selangor experts and academics from Universiti Malaya, offering information and insights on water to encourage sustainable water use among Malaysians as well as the use of water-efficient products further demonstrate a dedication to promoting sustainable water practices and conservation efforts in the community.
Air Selangor’s unwavering commitment to sustainability permeates every aspect of its operations. Through its comprehensive strategic framework, technological advancements and community efforts, the company hopes to shape the future of water services in Malaysia while also setting a commendable example for the entire region.
