Why Caregiving Connects Us All

Why Caregiving Connects Us All

Easterseals expands support for family caregivers and shows how caregiving connects families and communities at every stage of life.

Across the country, caregiving is part of daily life. More people are caring for a partner, an aging parent, a veteran, or a child with a disability. The need for stronger caregiving support keeps growing. Easterseals wants caregiving to be seen as something that connects us all—and is calling for stronger support for family caregivers.

“Almost all of us will give or receive care in our lifetime—it is one of the things that connects us all,” said Kendra Davenport, President and CEO of Easterseals. “When we strengthen support for family caregivers, no one has to carry that work alone, and whole communities are stronger for it.”

Caregiving often happens in everyday moments: getting ready in the morning, planning an outing, preparing for an appointment, or offering comfort when something feels uncertain. These routines are the real, daily work of caring for someone. They can be hard, too, as needs grow and medical or money systems get harder to manage.

For many people with disabilities, independence does not mean doing everything alone. It means having the right support to make their own choices, take part in daily life, and stay close to their community. Access to disability services makes that possible.

Caregiving connects people to each other, and that support is easier to keep up when it is shared. Easterseals has done this work since 1919, predating most federal disability programs by decades. Today, it gives families expert caregiving and support services at every stage of life. That includes physical therapy, job training, in-home care, respite for primary caregivers, and tools like speech apps and mobility devices. Caregivers also get the guidance they need, so they do not have to face complex systems on their own.

Most people need more than one kind of support, because real life rarely fits one category. When services work together, caregivers spend less time on paperwork and phone calls. They get more time for daily life and their own health.

Caregiving already connects families and communities, often in ways that are hard to see. Stronger family caregiver support keeps people from burning out, and it means no family faces these duties alone.

Easterseals shows what is possible: a world where people are not just getting by, but are fully supported to thrive.
