Climate change poses a significant threat to millions of coffee farmers around the world, impacting their crops and consequently their lives. Now is the moment to take decisive actions towards securing a sustainable and prosperous future for coffee farmers and our industry.
JDE Peet’s Pledges Net Zero Carbon Emissions: Brewing a Sustainable Coffee Future
At JDE Peet’s we are committed to creating a sustainable future through our Common Grounds programme. As part of this important initiative, we are actively working towards achieving our goal of net zero carbon emissions by 2050.
Sustainable Sips: JDE Peet’s Journey to a Net Zero Carbon Coffee Industry
Why? Because climate change poses a significant threat to millions of coffee farmers around the world, impacting their crops, and thus also impacting their lives and the future of our industry. Now is the moment to take decisive action. Our commitment extends beyond the environmental imperative; it is a crucial step towards securing a sustainable and prosperous future for coffee farmers and ensuring the longevity of the coffee industry for generations to come.
This is why we are committed to reduce our GHG emissions through our ambitious SBTi target and net zero ambition. Beyond the commitment, we all need actions and impact. After 3 years of journey, our continuous investment and relentless efforts in our own operations have led to significant decrease of our own emissions.
On the supply chain emissions, we are engaging our suppliers to join our SBTi journey so that we all play our part. Our R&D team is also engaged to develop innovations and technologies that are future proof with lower emissions, circular packaging and healthy nutrition profile.
Brewing Change: JDE Peet’s Bold Steps Towards Net Zero Emissions by 2050
Finally, at JDE Peet’s we are investing heavily to directly support the most critical part of our supply chain, the coffee and tea farmers. Since 2021, we initiated an industry leading assess, address, progress approach to deliver real impact at origin. In 2022, our partner, Enveritas, assessed more than 40,000 farmers which allowed us to identify local challenges and reach those most in need. Working collaboratively with governments, NGOs and our suppliers, we invest in projects to address those issues and bring tangible long-term solutions. Finally, our projects are verified independently to measure impact.
These projects include training farmers on regenerative agricultural practices, which not only improve their income, but also ensure that they are done in a way that protect nature and reduce emissions. We are also actively engaged to stop coffee related deforestation, not by selecting only deforestation free coffee, but by stopping future deforestation. With our technology and sustainability partner Enveritas, we invested to develop a system to identify coffee fields planted on deforested land post December 2020.
Additionally, we are now engaging with governments and NGOs to reforest these fields which represent a negligible fraction of existing coffee plots. This will ensure that coffee remains deforestation free moving forward without excluding any farmers and ensure their access to EU markets at no cost for origin countries.
Inclusivity is key in our approach to sustainability. Indeed, for JDE Peet’s, responsible means that no one is left behind. This is a long journey to tackle systemic issues, but JDE Peet’s is committed to deliver a better future for coffee and tea.
