SLB is working to deliver cleaner energy for today and tomorrow
Balancing clean energy goals with the increasing global demand for a secure, reliable and affordable energy supply is the most complex challenge the world has faced.
For almost 100 years, global technology company SLB has been driving energy technology breakthroughs, and now it is addressing the climate crisis with a balanced approach that includes reducing its own emissions; innovating technologies to help its customers create more energy with fewer emissions; and investing in new energy technologies that will increasingly power the future.
Delivering on its emissions reduction commitments
With a commitment to reduce its own (Scope 1 and 2) emissions by 30 percent from 2019 to 2025, SLB is already at a 23 percent reduction, achieved through operational efficiency, electrification, low-carbon fuel alternatives, and adding electric vehicles to its fleet.
As the first company in the sector to include Scope 3 in its net zero commitment, SLB is committed to a 30% reduction from 2019-2030 on the path to net zero by 2050, and is already at 21%.
As a technology company, approximately 95% of SLB’s emissions are Scope 3, and the company is innovating technologies that help customers create more energy with fewer emissions.
Going further in reducing emissions from oil and gas
A major contributor to this decarbonization achievement is SLB’s Transition Technolgies™ portfolio, in which it continues to invest. Through these technologies, customers avoided 700,000 metric tons of CO2 in 2022—equivalent to taking more than 150,000 cars off the road. One example is the innovative EcoShield™ technology, a cement-free system that minimizes the CO2 footprint of an oil well’s construction. EcoShield has the potential to avoid up to 5 million metric tons of CO2 emissions annually—the equivalent of removing 1.1 million cars from the road each year.
Addressing methane emissions
The most immediate opportunity for the oil & gas industry is the rapid reduction of methane emissions from its operations. In 2022, SLB established its End-to-end Emissions Solutions (SEES) business to help customers monitor, measure and ultimately eliminate methane emissions from their operations. SEES recently launched a new methane point instrument: a small, durable, ‘plug-and-play’ solution that automates methane monitoring 24/7, using sensors to detect, locate, and quantify emissions from across operations.
Investing in new energy technologies to power the future
While SLB is focused on helping its customers to deliver cleaner energy today, it is also investing in its New Energy business, with a focus on five clean energy components: carbon capture and sequestration (CCUS); geothermal and geo-energy; low-carbon hydrogen; stationary energy storage; and critical minerals.
There is no “one-size-fits-all” approach to the energy transition: it’s about local solutions that best meet the needs of local communities, and forging partnerships to develop solutions and drive progress together. As a global technology company, SLB is leveraging its expertise to develop—and ultimately deploy at scale—decarbonization solutions and clean technology that will enable the clean energy ecosystems of tomorrow, for the benefit of all.
