Salt: An indispensable raw material for green chemistry and sustainable value chains
How salt and chemicals producer Nobian is working to realize its vision of a world where chemistry is completely green.
Green Chemistry
Salt and chemicals producer Nobian beliefs in a world where chemistry is completely green and responsible. With its ambitious “Grow Greener Together” sustainability program, the company has set itself the goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2040 with 100% renewable energy. It aims to become one of the most sustainable chemical companies in Europe. In cooperation with the Dutch government Nobian aims to bring forward its net zero target by 10 years to 2030.
That Nobian is working hard to achieve this goal is demonstrated by the fact that the company has been awarded an EcoVadis Platinum Award for two consecutive years. This ranks the company among the top 1% of industrial companies in terms of sustainability, amongst the more than 90,000 companies rated by EcoVadis worldwide.
About Nobian
Nobian is a European leader in the production of high-purity salt and essential chemicals.
It transforms salt into chlorine, caustic soda, hydrogen, and chloromethanes. These are all essential chemicals needed to produce many of the materials that we use every day, or that are needed for the energy transition. Using vacuum salt technology, raw brine is converted into salt through evaporation and crystallization processes, through electrolysis the salt is converted into essential chemicals. Nobian is proud to participate in the UN-aligned Vision 2045 campaign, which aims to inspire others and to support the energy transition. www.nobian.com
How Salt Contributes to a Sustainable Future
Salt is an indispensable raw material which is vital for green chemistry and sustainable value chains. Salt is at the beginning of many value chains for materials that are essential for the energy transition, such as solar panels, LED lights, insulation materials, sustainable window frames, light-weight materials, wind turbine blades, and (electric car) batteries. In addition, salt caverns can be used as a safe way to store large quantities of hydrogen, or other types of energy, such as natural gas. As a result, salt and salt-based chemistry play a crucial role in the energy transition, particularly for renewable energy and energy storage.
Grow Greener Together
As a key player at the beginning of the value chain, Nobian has a significant impact on many production processes by providing crucial salt for European value chains and chemical production clusters in North-Western Europe. For example, in addition to becoming carbon neutral, Nobian is also focussed on delivering certified green products. It is also focussed to further strengthen its capabilities to help stabilize the energy grid through e-flex technology and the utilization of renewable energy.
Nobian’s approach is based on its strong belief that becoming sustainable is something that can only be done together. Nobian’s commitment to sustainability, to Grow Greener Together, is channelled through collective efforts as well as collaboration with employees, customers, suppliers, governments, partners, universities, start-ups, and local communities.
