By learning from life’s chemistry, Enveda aims to solve the toughest challenges facing human and planetary health
Life’s Chemistry
Life is a process, not a substance. To be alive is to grow and reproduce, to respond to the environment, to break down and to build up. Each of these living processes is composed of billions of chemical reactions occurring every second. Chemistry fuses nucleotides to replicate DNA, fires synapses, and turns your breakfast into your body. Life is Chemistry.
Biodiversity is a vast library of chemical solutions to the problems facing life, encoding solutions that enable life.
At Enveda, we are dedicated to learning from life. We are inspired by the creativity, resourcefulness, and adaptability expressed through life’s chemistry, and we believe that this wisdom can be applied to solve the toughest problems faced in our lives, both as individuals and as a global collective.
Learning from Life’s Chemistry
To date, the molecules making up life’s chemistry have been painstakingly unearthed, one by one. This massive effort has been incredibly fruitful, yielding chemical compounds that have been used for a wide range of applications, including serving as the inspiration for nearly a third of all medicines available today. However, we have only identified a tiny fraction of the billions of unique chemical compounds that scientists estimate exist in nature.
At Enveda, our ultimate goal is to enable and accelerate our ability to learn from life’s chemistry, and to turn life’s solutions into our solutions. We’ve built the most advanced AI models that predict, catalog, and learn from life’s chemistry at an unprecedented pace and scale.
“Life’s chemistry is the ultimate problem-solving playbook,” says Viswa Colluru, PhD, Founder and CEO of Enveda, “but to date, we’ve only been able to skim a few pages. The technologies that we have built will allow us to read entire chapters at once and to put that new knowledge to use to create new medicines for patients in need.”
Merging Ancient Wisdom and Advanced Technologies
Life’s chemistry is vast and powerful. Our first focus is on discovering chemistry from living systems with the potential to yield new medicines. Humans have used plants as medicine for millennia, and we created the largest database of recorded medicinal plant uses from cultures around the world and integrated it with modern pharmacological datasets, revealing the plants that are an ideal starting point for our search and the diseases and conditions most likely to benefit from these medicines.
“Traditional medicine practices from around the world have identified plants with established therapeutic properties, but we know very little about the chemistry that underlies those effective medicines. By merging this ancient wisdom with our advanced technologies, including AI, we have unearthed and optimized numerous promising molecules, with our first two candidate drugs slated to enter the clinic later this year for chronic inflammatory diseases,” says Colluru.
Beyond medicine, we believe that life’s chemistry has applications at every interface with biology, including food, agriculture, environmental monitoring, diagnostics, manufacturing, and beyond. At Enveda, we believe that the more we learn from life, the more we enable life, everywhere.
