Senior Europe’s journey to localize the battery value chain across Europe
The Crucial Role of Lithium-Ion Batteries in a Fossil Fuel-Free Future
Within a generation, we must rid our societies of fossil fuels. In this transition, batteries play an important part. They power day-to-day appliances – be it the electric toothbrush you use every day or the smartphone you can’t live without – and enable the electrification of transport as well as storage of intermittent renewable energy.
Therefore, it should come as no surprise that global demand for lithium-ion batteries is projected to experience a 27% annual growth between 2022 and 2030, surging from 700 GWh to 4.7 TWh. This development is propelled by regulations like Europe’s Fit for 55 program and the US Inflation Reduction Act, as well as significant customer interest in greener technologies.
Senior Material: Pioneering Advanced Lithium-Ion Battery Technology
For over twenty years, Shenzhen-based Senior Material has been a global leading force in this shift towards sustainable energy solutions. Specializing in research, development, and production of advanced separator films for lithium-ion batteries, Senior plays a crucial role in the ever-evolving landscape of battery technology.
The separator film is a near invisible, though crucial, lithium-ion battery component that insulates battery anodes and cathodes from each other, thereby ensuring a safe and reliable flow of energy by preventing short circuits and overheating. With over 500 patents, the Senior separator film solutions are the unsung heroes behind the safe and efficient operation of lithium-ion batteries.
In 2021, Swedish Senior Europe embarked on a journey to establish factories and state-of-the-art R&D facilities in Sweden – taking the latest technologies and innovations from the ‘Silicon Valley of China’ to the epicenter of European electrification. This marks the commitment to localizing the battery value chain across Europe, previously dependent on imported goods, primarily from China. The main focus is on supplying separator films to the automotive industry, promoting the electrification of transportation and thereby reducing global CO2 emissions.
Senior Europe’s Impact: Advancing the Lithium-Ion Battery Value Chain in Sweden
Today, the facilities in Eskilstuna, Sweden, are ready to play a pivotal role in this journey. Serving as one of Europe’s largest factories for separator film production, they are already contributing to the success of prominent manufacturers like Northvolt. The first facility will produce 600 million sqm separator film yearly, enabling manufacturing of 600,000 EV batteries with ambitious plans to expand to 3,800 million sqm by 2030, leading to approximately 3,840,000 EV batteries. Sweden serves as the first home of Senior Europe, being steadfast in building a localized foundation of expertise and technological know-how to cater not only to the European market, but also global battery manufacturers.
By bringing new knowledge to Europe, Senior Europe is relentlessly working to develop products and processes to minimize climate impact. Resulting in a sole use of green energy exercising more supply chain control and emphasizing effective waste management. By establishing a fully European separator film production in Sweden, great and important steps are taken towards a greener battery value chain. Efforts that represent a significant stride towards a more sustainable global battery industry, paving the way for a greener future.
