Water is a paradoxical substance. While it covers a vast percentage of the globe, the amount of useable water – purified and available for human consumption, or for use in agriculture and industry – is getting increasingly scarce. This is the result of the effects of urbanisation, climate change and environmental pollution.
Wilo Group’s Innovative Solutions to Tackle Water Scarcity in Africa
In Africa, for example, droughts that reduce the availability of water lead to widespread suffering. The Wilo Group, a supplier of pumps and pump systems, is tackling this issue by producing sustainable solutions to such water scarcity-based problems.
Headquartered in Dortmund, Germany, Wilo is an international leader in its industry and is working towards a mission: To invent and manage responsible water solutions that benefit everyone, everywhere. Therefore, the multinational technology group is heavily incorporating sustainability into its business.
Sustainability at the Core: Wilo Group’s Corporate Strategy
“We don’t just pay lip service to sustainability, it’s an integral part of our corporate strategy”, explains Oliver Hermes, President & CEO of the Wilo Group. “Today and in the future, we will continue to make an important global contribution to shaping the rapid process of urbanisation, counteracting energy and water shortages, and slowing the pace of climate change.”
One of Wilo’s strategic targets is providing millions of people around the world with better access to clean water. A key factor in this effort is improving the efficiency of water systems around the globe and making them more sustainable.
Tackling Global Challenges: Sustainable Water Management and Climate Change Mitigation
“Sustainable water management can mitigate the consequences of climate change”, emphasises Georg Weber, Member of the Executive Board and CTO of the Wilo Group. “Global water consumption is enormous, and the very unevenly distributed fresh-water reserves are shrinking. Inefficient systems lead to an enormous waste of water. In addition, the treatment of wastewater is often neglected. It is expected that 2.4 billion people will be affected by water shortages in 2050.”
Current transformation processes and the increasingly accelerating climate change require targeted, long-term solutions. Wilo is proving its forward-thinking leadership in water solutions and sustainability by addressing the challenges posed by urbanisation, water shortage, globalisation, climate change and energy shortage.
