In the dynamic landscape of our energy transition, fostering diversity within the workforce is a strategic objective that will unlock innovative and sustainable climate solutions for all. It is, therefore, no surprise that the 28th convening of the Council of Parties (COP) has focused on delivering a more inclusive COP experience to “achieve transformative progress across the climate agenda.” Full statement from the President-Delegate of the United Arab Emirates and the UN Climate Change Executive Secretary
A statement of this magnitude strikes a moral imperative and marks an intentional turning point in the discussion of inclusivity. It illustrates that collectively; we are more aligned than ever on the viewpoint that diversity and inclusivity make the world a better place.
It’s Good and Good for Business
It is widely understood that diversity of representation and thought leadership leads to better outcomes and, for the business community, can lead to more profitable results. According to a 2020 study by McKinsey & Company, the most diverse companies are now more likely than ever to outperform less diverse peers on profitability. As a utility-scale solar energy company pioneering the decarbonization of the U.S. electricity sector, Pine Gate Renewables approaches diversity, equity, and inclusion as the right thing to do and an intelligent business decision; in short, it’s good and good for business.
Data from the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) supports the trend towards building a more responsive and inclusive industry. An inclusive workforce is better positioned to respond to and resolve our shared climate complexities. Since 2015, solar industry employment has increased by 39% for women, 92% for Hispanic or Latino workers, 18% for Asian workers, 73% for Black or African American workers, and 19% for veterans (SEIA). Notably, veteran employment in the solar and storage industry has grown by 63%, from 13,192 in 2013 to 21,533 veterans in 2022 (SEIA). Diverse perspectives lead to better decision-making and enhanced innovation, which is critical in an industry where employees must often forge new ground.
“The success of any company doesn’t depend solely on the product or service it provides. Success is found within the company’s DNA, those critical foundational elements that, when combined, create energy and bring life to an organization. At Pine Gate, this dynamic blend is our people, values, and commitment. These three key differentiators drive our vision,” said Ben Catt, Chief Executive Officer, Pine Gate Renewables. “We bring others into the fold, make space for learning and practice, allow for safe failure. Through this commitment to action and showing up for each other, we have organically created a space that includes and values all.”
Everyone Plays a Part
At Pine Gate, we are keenly aware that the energy transition is not just about harnessing renewable resources but about tapping into diverse talent that will provide the innovative solutions needed for a sustainable future. Everyone plays a part in achieving our ambitious clean energy goals, and all deserve a seat at the table.
