Alperia aims for net-zero emissions: 80% of investments in sustainability.
Alperia’s Ambitious Goals: Cutting Carbon Emissions for Climate Neutrality
Alperia will be cutting carbon dioxide emissions by 46% by 2027 and 70% by 2031 compared to 2021 in order to achieve climate neutrality by 2040, 10 years ahead of Europe’s target. The company will be also allocating 80% of the investments envisaged in its 2022-2027 Business Plan to meet at least 10 of UN’s sustainability targets.
Thanks to these objectives and figures, Alperia, one of the main players in the green energy sector, stands out among Italian companies with its sustainability performance. In fact, it was ranked as the top Italian utility among Europe’s Climate Leaders 2023 in a ranking published in the Financial Times. An outstanding recognition for a multi-utility company that has made the fight against climate change its corner store and one of its core values.
Alperia’s Legacy in Renewable Energy: Harnessing Hydroelectric Power
For more than 120 years, Alperia has been producing renewable energy with the power of water. Today, Alperia operates 35 hydroelectric power plants in the Italian region of South Tyrol and ranks as one of the top three hydroelectric producers in Italy. Alperia is a forward-looking company that aims to provide 100% sustainable energy services: from renewable energy production to energy distribution, district heating, sale of green electricity and gas, e-mobility and energy efficiency solutions.
The Financial Times’ ranking of European companies is based on the reduction of greenhouse gas intensity over the course of five years. This figure considers both the company’s activities along the entire value chain as well as its own energy consumption. Since 2020, Alperia has been the leading Italian Utility in terms of voluntarily offsetting its currently unavoidable, operational emissions (scope 1 and 2), while also accelerating its path towards the goal of Net-Zero emissions.
In its business plan 2022-2027 and strategic plan “Vision 2031”, Alperia has set itself the target of reducing its CO2e emissions (Scope 1, 2 and 3) by 46% by 2027 (compared to 2021) and achieving Net-Zero emissions by 2040. In addition to achieving emission reduction, some of the other criteria used to select companies for the Financial Times’ ranking were the commitments made under the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi). Alperia joined the SBTi in 2021 and has committed to achieving near- and long-term company-wide emission reductions in line with the SBTi.
Thanks to its founding values, in 2023 Alperia also ranks among the top ten most climate-conscious Italian energy companies, having reduced its CO2e emissions the most in relation to its turnover. The ranking was compiled by Corriere della Sera, Planet 2030 and Statista.
