The urgency of climate change mitigation is driving the need for concrete actions across all sectors. As a leading energy company in Europe, Fortum is fighting climate change by generating clean energy at scale and helping industries to decarbonize.
A balanced energy system is key for the energy transition
Climate change is a fundamental threat to our planet, and we see its dire consequences already today. Countries are implementing stringent policies and setting ambitious climate goals to accelerate the green energy transition. Finland, as an example, has the ambition to become carbon neutral by 2035. The shift is not only driven by regulatory mandates, but also by growing consumer demand for environmentally responsible products and services.
For the green transition to happen, the need for clean, reliable, and affordable electricity will increase. The Nordic countries stand out, having a CO2-free energy system based on hydro, nuclear and renewable resources like wind and solar. Fortum has been engaged in CO2-free production for more than 100 years and is one of the cleanest energy producers in Europe – 98% CO2-free – committed to further emission reduction targets based on SBTi, aiming to be carbon neutral by 2030.
For the benefit of society, diverse power generation is essential. Fortum is unique in having a diverse portfolio of firm power, flexible power, and renewable power – all the components needed for a balanced and reliable energy system –provided at scale to consumers, companies, and societies, reliably and affordably around the clock.
Decarbonization is a joint effort
To mitigate climate change, large energy intensive industries need to decarbonize. Fortum, with its own production already carbon neutral, now focuses on facilitating the decarbonization of other industries, co-creating solutions and developing projects in close partnerships.
One such example is Fortum’s collaboration with Microsoft, working together on the world’s largest project for heat recovery from data centers. In the future, CO2-free excess heat from a new data center region will heat homes, public buildings and businesses in Finland’s second-largest city, Espoo.
Fortum is working closely with the customers, increasingly learning about their challenges, and helping them by providing services to match their needs and climate targets.
The society of the future is being built right now
A carbon-neutral society is not a distant vision. The Nordics already have clean electricity and potential for future investments. Fortum has the capabilities, the assets, the expertise and the passion to make the transition.
The company is consistently driven by a determination to create a world where there is a healthy balance between the well-being of people, societal and business needs, and the diversity of nature. Moving forward, there is a need for innovation: to refine our current energy system, develop new, smarter solutions, and change our energy consumption patterns. For Fortum – it is in the company’s DNA to make it happen.
