Sustainability at a Crossroads – Building the Business Case

Sustainability at a Crossroads – Building the Business Case
  • PublishedOctober 1, 2025

KERAMIDA’s participation in Climate Week provided the opportunity to amplify a critical message: sustainability is at a crossroads. Geopolitical and global uncertainties can serve to galvanize sustainability, focusing on the business case for sustainable development.

Building the Business Case for Sustainability

Sustainability must be envisioned as a strategy that builds the business case for CEOs by demonstrating how technological and operational changes can lead to greener products, enhanced mid- and long-term resiliency, improved marketability, and increased cost-benefit impact to a company. An example of a commonly used strategic approach that may not be supportive of the business case is the reliance on Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) to meet GHG emissions reductions. While this approach may provide a short-term solution, it is an expensive and unreliable strategy for mid- and long-term performance. Most importantly, it fails to contribute to the actual improvement of the product’s long-term competitiveness or the corporation’s sustained growth.

Sustainability in a Regulatory Era

Sustainability is increasingly being defined by regulatory frameworks across the globe. In the US, compliance with California’s SB 261 and SB 253 laws is the current focus, while in the EU, CSRD is the center of attention. KERAMIDA’s leadership recognizes that organizations must navigate an evolving compliance landscape while maintaining competitiveness. Understanding the requirements of a law or regulation is not enough for developing a compliance strategy. The key is to understand a corporation’s specific characteristics and needs, from production to marketing, and to apply these to a regulatory framework in order to develop a compliance strategy tailored for that corporation.

By leveraging nearly 40 years of expertise in environmental and safety regulatory compliance, KERAMIDA builds targeted strategies to help businesses comply with sustainability regulations. These strategies align corporate operations with climate and sustainability goals, enabling clients to create effective compliance plans and prepare for disclosure frameworks such as CA SB 253 and CA SB 261, as well as the EU’s CSRD. This proactive approach helps future-proof businesses in a rapidly changing global market.

Dr. Vicky Keramida, CEO & Chief Technical Officer, explains:

“Sustainability is here to stay. But we need to focus on sustainability’s three pillars: Protect Human Health, Protect the Planet, Protect the Corporation’s Financial Health. We need to be able to rely on sustainability to develop the business case for the CEO.”

This philosophy underscores KERAMIDA’s work: balancing compliance, innovation, and economic resilience to create strategies that endure.

At a time when sustainability is entering a new regulatory era worldwide, KERAMIDA has positioned itself as a trusted advisor for industries, municipalities, and investors alike. With more than 38 years of expertise, the company brings together sustainability, assurance, environmental, health, safety, and engineering services to address clients’ needs.
