Meyer Turku Charts the Course towards a More Sustainable Maritime Industry

Meyer Turku Charts the Course towards a More Sustainable Maritime Industry
  • PublishedSeptember 17, 2025

The Meyer Turku shipyard in Southwest Finland is a place where engineering, art and sustainability come together.

Meyer Turku is one of the world’s largest and most modern shipyards. The highly advanced luxury cruise ships built at the Turku shipyard are known across the world for their cutting-edge technology, groundbreaking innovations and exquisite design. Industrial shipbuilding in Turku began as early as 1737, and nowadays the Turku shipyard builds the biggest cruise ships in the world.

“We have a long history and tradition here in Finland for building ships. We are not afraid of challenges or creating something totally new from scratch”, says Sarita Manikas, Meyer Turku’s Senior Specialist in Interior Architecture.

Today, the Meyer Turku shipyard is one of the industry leaders in sustainable shipbuilding. The company’s long experience, top expertise and technological innovations are driving the entire shipbuilding industry forward and towards a more sustainable future.

Responsibility as Meyer Turku’s Core Value

The shipbuilding industry involves both traditions worth preserving and fascinating challenges for tomorrow, with sustainability being one of the most pressing ones. As corporate responsibility is a core value at Meyer Turku, it guides the company’s long-standing efforts to advance more sustainable shipbuilding.

“Sustainability is no longer seen as a separate agenda, it’s embedded in every conversation. New technologies are tested in cruise ships from energy optimization to sustainable materials, and we are committed to constant development”, says Mirja Rasi-Mäki, Meyer Turku’s Senior Sustainability Specialist, Product Development.

Meyer Turku also plays a significant role in society. The delivery of a single cruise ship represents up to one percent of Finland’s annual exports, and the impact on economy and employment is significant.

Meyer Turku’s Net Zero Future

The maritime industry is now undergoing a transformation and facing the biggest challenge in its history: how to combat climate change and achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions.

“To boost this journey, we have started a large research program, NEcOLEAP. The main goal of NEcOLEAP is to support [the shipyard and its network companies in the green transition]. Together with over 100 Finnish companies in the Finnish maritime industry, we are developing a net zero cruise ship concept by the end of 2025”, explains Liina Vahala, Head of Product Development at Meyer Turku.

Meyer Turku is also committed to reaching net zero GHG emissions for the shipyard’s own operations by 2030 (scope 1 & 2). In more detail, the shipyard aims to reduce its direct and energy-related emissions by approximately 90% from a 2019 baseline, before neutralizing residual emissions through robust, high-quality carbon removals.

With deep roots in tradition and eyes set on the horizon, Meyer Turku is not just building ships: it is building a better maritime legacy for generations to come.
