Hyundai N is the high performance division of Hyundai Motor Company. N is the technology powerhouse of Hyundai, using motorsport proven technologies in exciting electric vehicles such as the IONIQ 5 N, voted world car of the year by world car awards.
Hyundai N: born out of motorsports
Since the beginning, Hyundai N has participated successfully in top class motorsports such as the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC), TCR World Tour, and Nürburgring 24hr. Based in Alzenau, Germany, Hyundai Motorsport was set up to develop a long-term motorsport programme that demonstrates the emotion and engineering which Hyundai puts into its cars.
Motorsports is the cradle of Hyundai N where Hyundai’s high-performance concepts are first introduced.. Through the tough, competitive environment of motorsports, Hyundai Motor engineers identify further refinement and potential performance enhancements for its N range.
What does Hyundai N mean?
The ‘N’ in Hyundai N stands for Namyang, home to Hyundai Motor’s global R&D Centre in Korea since 1995, where the idea was born, and for the Nürburgring, home to Hyundai Motor’s European Test Centre, where the i30 N was further developed and tested. The close connection between Namyang and the Nürburgring created the foundation for N, aiming to build on the company’s motorsport experience to bring thrilling winding road fun to customers who love cars. The ‘N’ logo itself embodies this idea, as it symbolizes a chicane.
Paving the way for electric high performance
Hyundai N’s first EV, IONIQ 5 N, elevates driving fun to new heights, adhering to the three pillars of N performance – Corner Rascal, Racetrack Capability and Everyday Sportscar – by leveraging motorsport-bred technologies and years of electrified ‘Rolling Lab’ development. It heralds a new era of high-performance driving, redefining the thrill of electric driving on road and track (without compromising eco-conscious values).
Optimized EV platform: Setting new standards in the world of performance driving
IONIQ 5 N’s E-GMP is the first to be equipped with Hyundai’s fourth generation 84kWh battery, providing stronger power output thanks to a two-stage inverter with increased energy efficiency, spinning the electric motors up to 21,000 RPM and delivering 478 kW / 650 PS with N Grin Boost engaged. E-GMP also gives it a low centre of gravity and even weight distribution to optimise driveability, while extensive reinforcements provide exceptional chassis dynamics.
Conquering the toughest hillclimb in the world
Hyundai Motor competed in this year’s PPIHC with two IONIQ 5 N TA (Time Attack) Specs and one production IONIQ 5 N. All three models conquered a challenging 12.42-mile (20 km) course that ascends over 4,700 feet (1,438 meters) to the summit of Pikes Peak, facing 156 turns, unpredictable weather and high-altitude conditions that can affect both drivers and vehicles. The IONIQ 5 N TA Spec, driven by Hyundai World Rally driver Dani Sordo, finished the race in 09:30.852 and winning the exhibition class.
The IONIQ 5 N TA Spec is designed to highlight the production-spec IONIQ 5 N’s strengths without significant modifications. Other than minor software tuning to increase the maximum motor output1) and some high-performance part changes, including new shock absorbers, motorsport-spec brakes and slick tires2), the TA Spec retains most of what production IONIQ 5 N offers to regular customers.
