In today’s tech-saturated world, we face an epidemic of isolation. The Y in Central Maryland wants you to disconnect to reconnect.

Disconnect to Reconnect: Strengthening Youth

Our digital world has led to a growing epidemic of disconnection. Dramatic increases in loneliness, depression, and stress are becoming more and more prevalent. The Y in Central Maryland is uniquely positioned as a healthy antidote to the growing crisis of loneliness, a challenge increasingly linked to excessive screen time and digital dependence—particularly among children and teens.

The Y is reaffirming its commitment to creating space for real-world connections. By expanding and strengthening programs for youth and teens, the Y provides safe, welcoming spaces where young people can engage, play, learn, and grow—without relying on technology. From early childhood education to K-12 youth development programs, children and teens are afforded opportunities to connect in meaningful and memorable ways that reinforce the value of relationship-building.

We invite you to watch Disconnect to Reconnect: The Y Takes Action to Strengthen Youth and Communities to learn more about the Y’s approach to fostering engagement and real connections among children and youth.

Disconnect to Reconnect: Strengthening Communities

As a charitable organization dedicated to developing the full potential of every individual, the Y’s vision is to build a more connected central Maryland community. Through Y membership and programs offered across central Maryland, the Y endeavors to create a greater sense of engagement, empathy, health, and overall well-being for all. This intentional focus on connection reaches people of all ages and backgrounds, creating a deeper and more meaningful impact across every point of access—from Y Family Centers to Y Fresh Mart food pantries.

Research shows, and the Y has long known, that feeling a part of a supportive, caring network of people where everyone is valued is more than just a “nice-to-have”. It’s essential to good health and well-being. That sense of community promotes feelings of self-worth and connectivity.

Across 12 Y Family Centers and 130+ youth development sites in central Maryland, over 350,000 individuals and families are welcomed into Y spaces each day. Through our programs:

  • Seniors are active, vibrant, and form meaningful relationships;
  • Families are able to put life distractions aside for a few hours of play and fun;
  • Busy parents get much-needed “me time” and self-care;
  • Teens find their voice through various teen leadership programs;
  • Children build confidence as they learn new skills.

  All of this happens simultaneously in shared spaces, across generations, among all walks of life. It is
  community in motion.

The Y’s focus is not solely on Y spaces and programs. For example, Y Community Health is a collaborative network of local community-based organizations that provide community members across central Maryland with the health-related resources they need, including mental, physical, substance use, and more—all to create a healthier community.

In today’s world, Ys are truly one of those rare places where everyone is welcome to gather and connect in common purpose. Together, we can balance the digital pendulum of disconnection and rebuild community.
