Gardens by the Bay: Singapore’s Icon of Innovation and Sustainability
See how Gardens by the Bay flourishes through innovation, energy-efficient design and biodiversity stewardship.
Reimaging the Gardens for a new generation
Gardens by the Bay is one of Singapore’s most recognisable icons, with an appeal that extends well beyond traditional garden enthusiasts. Through constantly evolving floral displays, immersive programming, and thoughtful placemaking, the Gardens reimagines what a “garden of the future” can be, one that uses creative storytelling and innovative presentations to connect meaningfully with its visitors.
What began as a horticultural show garden has grown into something bigger, a living expression of how the right blend of nature, technology and thoughtful planning can create a sustainable destination that resonates with diverse audiences.
Designing sustainability in the heart of the city
Located in the prime waterfront area of the Marina Bay Downtown in the south of Singapore, Gardens by the Bay exemplifies Singapore’s evolution from a Garden City to a City in Nature. Sustainability was embedded into its design from the onset, enabling the Gardens to operate on carefully designed cycles of energy and water anchored in three core pillars: energy-efficiency and low-carbon cooling; integrated water management and enhancement of urban biodiversity.
A key feature of the Gardens is its climate-controlled conservatories, which house plant species from diverse regions of the world. The Flower Dome and Cloud Forest are supported by an integrated cooling strategy that combines architectural design, energy-efficient systems, and a circular biomass-to-energy system. Horticultural waste collected across Singapore is converted into renewable energy onsite, reducing reliance on conventional power sources and enabling efficient cooling at scale.
The iconic Supertrees also play an important role in this ecosystem. Several are fitted with solar panels that generate clean energy, much like real trees. The energy harvested is used to power their lighting at night, reinforcing the integration of form and function.
Beyond the energy systems, the Gardens demonstrates how nature-based solutions can enhance urban biodiversity. Its interconnected lakes and wetlands naturally filter stormwater while creating habitats for aquatic plants, insects, birds, and fish. The newly created Kingfisher Wetlands further strengthens ecological resilience by supporting native species and storing “blue carbon”. Together, these systems show how infrastructure can be designed to perform ecological functions while serving as a vibrant green destination.
Equally important is how the Gardens broadens public engagement with nature. Its rich biodiversity provides an ideal setting for experiential learning through hands-on activities, learning journeys, treasure hunts and workshops. Digital elements are also incorporated where possible to make learning more exciting and interactive. These programmes blend nature with sustainability to spark curiosity, engage and inspire visitors to kickstart in their own sustainability journey.
Singapore’s Icon of Innovation and Sustainability
Sustainability remains an ongoing journey at the Gardens, where it continues to adopt smart systems to enhance its operations and plant care, while exploring new technologies to strengthen resilience and efficiency. New habitats are also created for biodiversity to connect and flourish across the landscape.
Through these efforts, Gardens by the Bay continues to position itself as a leading model showing how cities can grow greener, more resilient and liveable for future generations.
